Why not incorporate some underwear into your STEM challenges with some fantastic picture books?<div><br /></div><div><u>UNDERWEAR!</u> by Jenn Harvey is a really fun book to read in the classroom. Students have to make a pair of underwear that fit a class teddy bear. Students start by measuring the class teddy bear! They then use these measurements to make a pair of underwear that fits the teddy bear.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzJ7qJLzy5nUhKGmNEpQ4k8QfByMHCs9kJenVsqRTQF6-HeD7E11EnAAEBqwXcPUiRD4cacCtRM458XkN4HNxKIfDI-fk09QSa2Cjk-dPUyOUipZtfwwMHj03yPUSc20CzYgCWKbfTz34JKq93MkxYl2tNbal3p-v-sscd8x--xiD7Abo899HC-b2F/s350/underwearpic.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="263" data-original-width="350" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzJ7qJLzy5nUhKGmNEpQ4k8QfByMHCs9kJenVsqRTQF6-HeD7E11EnAAEBqwXcPUiRD4cacCtRM458XkN4HNxKIfDI-fk09QSa2Cjk-dPUyOUipZtfwwMHj03yPUSc20CzYgCWKbfTz34JKq93MkxYl2tNbal3p-v-sscd8x--xiD7Abo899HC-b2F/w640-h480/underwearpic.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Just grab ANY teddy bear to use as your class teddy bear. For this challenge, I get small stuffed bunnies from Oriental Trading Company. Students have to make a pair of creepy underwear for their bunny. It is a lot tougher than it sounds! A rock makes a pretty great pet! You don't have to feed it, walk it, or take it to the doctor. They are quiet and they don't cause any trouble!</span><div><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #351c75;">September 4th is National Pet Rock Day! </span> Why not celebrate this amazing holiday by adopting your own pet rock?</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggXR_aJB4H9SkWBRJ8bURrOXmrzIe6--gZaWnjr_840LkTb_YbIDjDNa3ebiAiz8k2631mp6GbbBNRCupakCbbsnA6laxU2JUQUfyJ_ShBEfrzj2w3_sO19CDKz8lP5pUNJnOl5ffcQLKz_9-kxMPH0lHNOkTvQeSeeTz4gyXEq8blAJWXKEFoAPr7/s1000/petrock1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="866" data-original-width="1000" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggXR_aJB4H9SkWBRJ8bURrOXmrzIe6--gZaWnjr_840LkTb_YbIDjDNa3ebiAiz8k2631mp6GbbBNRCupakCbbsnA6laxU2JUQUfyJ_ShBEfrzj2w3_sO19CDKz8lP5pUNJnOl5ffcQLKz_9-kxMPH0lHNOkTvQeSeeTz4gyXEq8blAJWXKEFoAPr7/s320/petrock1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">Grab a bags of river stones from the craft store or the dollar store. Amazon also has river stones you can order. Add some google eyes, yarn for hair, and other craft items to design your own unique pet rock. I also grab cheap cardboard boxes from Amazon to store our rocks in!</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">Once you have your pet rocks, why not do some Pet Rock STEM Challenges? While I have used these in October in the past, I think I am going to do them as one of our first science lessons this year. They encourage students to work together and they help students deal with failure after the first few attempts. These take a few tries to really figure out! <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bat-Flyers-Monthly-STEM-School-wide-Challenge-2812464" target="_blank">Click here to buy this pack for under $3!</a></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Convergence;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Convergence; font-size: medium;">Students can design their own bat flyers OR they can use the template provided. We start with the foam pipe strips you can find at your local hardware store. They make the BEST roller coaster tracks. I cut them in half lengthwise and store them in a tall laundry basket. You will also need masking tape (get these rolls at the local dollar store) and assorted marbles (you can also find these at the dollar store). This holiday began with a book - <u>The Dot</u> by Peter H. Reynolds. You can read the book OR you can find a read aloud of the book on youtube! The book tells a great story of a child learning to value their own art. At the end of the book this child passes on what they have learned to another child.</span><div><span style="font-family: Convergence; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Convergence; font-size: large;">For this challenge, you need very few materials. The STEM challenge is:</span></div><div><span style="font-family: Convergence; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Convergence; font-size: large;">Can you create the largest paper dot from a sheet of paper?</span></div><div><span style="font-family: Convergence; font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh373oXieQ_6iZqe23952LrSukldNhaqM3a_CIRQ7Svgc-hIdlz29OclBRM8IMssNpXTYQ2cQvHxfv66eyH4H7mIZUn9kVxpnD2KdHhapnLo9NJfkj6By2ZMmHlz6JR6fItvg1_Uqtx1oM/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="263" data-original-width="350" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh373oXieQ_6iZqe23952LrSukldNhaqM3a_CIRQ7Svgc-hIdlz29OclBRM8IMssNpXTYQ2cQvHxfv66eyH4H7mIZUn9kVxpnD2KdHhapnLo9NJfkj6By2ZMmHlz6JR6fItvg1_Uqtx1oM/w400-h301/image.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Convergence; font-size: large;">Use any size paper you want and any color of paper. It is a great way to get families talking about the things going on at school while having fun! </span><div><span style="font-family: Jockey One; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Jockey One; font-size: large;">Most of the time these family STEM challenges coordinate with challenges we are doing in the classroom. The August Family STEM Challenge is one of my favorites! Just send 10 balloons home with each student in a baggie. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Tallest-10-Balloon-Tower-Family-STEM-Challenge-6968457" target="_blank"> Click here to buy this pack! </a> You can also send a ruler in the bag. Students often have a vision of a scentist in their head as an old man with white hair in a lab coat. </span><div><span style="font-family: Grandstander; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Grandstander; font-size: large;">There are so many different scientists in the world and they are from many different places. These STEM packs gives students an opportunity to learn about some different scientists while they work through different STEM engineering challenges.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: Grandstander; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Grandstander; font-size: large;">I include these STEM challenges as we are working through different topics in science.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: Grandstander; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Grandstander; font-size: large;">While learning about fossils, we do this challenge and we learn about Mary Anning. You can find smaller growing creatures at dollar stores or on-line, but I really love the bigger ones! These can be found as alligators, lizards, or snakes. Since our school mascot is the gator, I hunt for the alligators at my local Dollar Tree. They usually have them in stock!</span><div><span style="font-family: Righteous; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWZ-l9vAST40Xu56-dpQDAQKRc1hibvlVW2aJqV79UOsh9PBvHGpSFsrJfT0WGtCvRyXxo7Lqf3NpbJMy382WBxqn1Hl4gm8YudAj2XGfY9Lhl6ypk1xhqXDAqZShUlcEeCkVcKV3JNhc/s1600/growgator.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWZ-l9vAST40Xu56-dpQDAQKRc1hibvlVW2aJqV79UOsh9PBvHGpSFsrJfT0WGtCvRyXxo7Lqf3NpbJMy382WBxqn1Hl4gm8YudAj2XGfY9Lhl6ypk1xhqXDAqZShUlcEeCkVcKV3JNhc/w300-h400/growgator.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Righteous; font-size: medium;"><div><span style="font-family: Righteous; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>These things get HUGE! While I like to reuse and recycle, I really like to cut up the boxes into flat pieces for STEM challenges! <div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJBZICepy44fbOD7IdT7_EptJXw_zu7P0GuqhaI8Quti0QOs42jCU8wfnrv4AV8nj8OAJT_i9Tpl4LTJW6cl3FFZITJKaieFG1OXIh7XCvFO91jXNk8-EGLDGr2xsyxIIpJvslctHezKY/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="726" data-original-width="1000" height="464" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJBZICepy44fbOD7IdT7_EptJXw_zu7P0GuqhaI8Quti0QOs42jCU8wfnrv4AV8nj8OAJT_i9Tpl4LTJW6cl3FFZITJKaieFG1OXIh7XCvFO91jXNk8-EGLDGr2xsyxIIpJvslctHezKY/w640-h464/image.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I bought a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Slice-Cutter-Ceramic-Safety-Auto-Retractable/dp/B00M1XZXGU/ref=sxin_9_b2b_sx_ftd_qd?cv_ct_cx=box+cutter&dchild=1&keywords=box+cutter&pd_rd_i=B00M1XZXGU&pd_rd_r=de7d3d78-3bcd-42cc-ae96-6bc4ce1c579c&pd_rd_w=JdacL&pd_rd_wg=fXopS&pf_rd_p=36781c68-4856-4161-b844-453ccfa48ebe&pf_rd_r=XPBG5F9BZH1ZRQ9SH9Y6&qid=1606492611&sr=1-2-0304cd0d-f9fd-4ddc-b2dc-9bd9c73622fc" target="_blank">$10 Slice Box Cutter from Amazon</a> (well worth it if you have a lot of boxes). I cut the top flaps first, then slice open the bottom and cut the sides off. You end up with a pile of cardboard sheets! I am alsways looking for cardboard sheets for our STEM challenges! I store these cardboard sheets in a large clear plastic tub with a lid! My storage bin is 132 quart size and it is huge! I grabbed it from my local Target store.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You will be so glad you saved all these boxes! I actually look forward to this time of the year because all the boxes I cut up can be used throughout the next calendar year! The storage bin helps me keep these cardboard sheets neat in my own classroom!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Start saving those boxes and turning them into cardboard sheets now!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><br /><br /></div>Smart Chick Teaching Resourceshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16568193240871203540noreply@blogger.com0
